Designer Interview: PushBUTTON
One of the stand out collections for me this year was by Korean based label PushBUTTON. It seems I am not alone in my adoration, judging from their growing international stocklist. It was a pleasure to have designer Seunggun Park participate in our designer interview series.

Paper-Doll: How did you get into fashion design?
Seunggun Park – Designer for PushBUTTON: I used to be a model & a singer when I was 18 years old. I was surrounded by a lot of clothes. It naturally made me want to make clothes myself.

What is the first thing you designed (personally or professionally)?
I have fantasies about women wearing pencil skirts, so my first design was a basic pencil skirt.

When did you launch your own label?
When I was model I played the role of both model and stylist. Once when I picked up clothes for a shoot I found a lovely out of the way space and.... I started a brand new my life. It was the winter of 2003.

What inspires you / your work?
I love divas, women singers or actresses. I cannot imagine life without music and music videos.
Describe your 2010 Collection.
The new collection is inspired by opening ceremony and reflects natural silhouettes with a sporty mood. There is a unique mix of fabrics with funky and crazy materials.

What is your favourite piece from your 2010 Collection?
My favourite is the Wrinkle Skirt. (Pictured above, center)

Did you have a personal soundtrack or favourite album that listened to while working on the 2010 collection?
My favourite album white I was designing the 2010 collection was “Favourite Thing - The Golden Filter”. I listened to that all the time.
What area of your work do you enjoy the most?
My space in my office (pictured above). Everyone calls it the “TREASURE ROOM” because there are a lot of toys, dolls, books and my Ipod.

What is the most surprising thing that has happened to you as a designer?
I am a more known of designer in Korea. When I go overseas, the foreign press says “you are to become the next big Asian designer”. I have had a run of luck. These days are the happiest.

If you could collaborate with any designer/artist/musician/etc. on a single project, who would it be and what would you do?
Jeremy Scott. We’d make an album and music video. Together we’d design all the garments, music, visuals, etc.

If you could design a wardrobe for any one person (past/present/real/fictional), who would it be?
Lady Gaga.
How would you describe your own personal style?
My style? A mix of unisex and conceptual basics!!

What is your favourite item in your personal wardrobe?
I have a lot of t-shirts.

Where do you shop for clothes when you're not wearing your own?
Uniqlo, American Apparel and local shops wherever I go.

What is on your current fashion wishlist?
I want a pair of roller skates.
What fashion trend would you not be caught dead in?
I don't like a western boots - I think they’re unfeminine!

What is the one item that every woman should have in her closet?
A men's jacket. A women wearing a men's jacket looks very sexy.

What is your favourite thing about the city you live in?
(Seoul, Korea) My space in my office.

What is next for your label?
I want to break into the overseas market. I also launched a second label “Dressmonster” ( It's more casual and contemporary with reasonable price points. I will be showing it overseas next season!
