Designer Interview: Reality Studio
Posted on Aug 19 2010

I've delayed posting this interview because I can never think of a succinct way to describe my admiration for
Reality Studio. Designer Svenja Specht makes clothes that I would wear on a daily basis in my dream world. I”ll let the interview and photos speak for themselves.
How did you get into fashion design?
Svenja Specht – Reality Studio: It started quite early and it became a way to express myself.
What is the first thing you designed (personally or professionally)?
At age 6 - I made a pair of shoes for my Monchichi with heels made of cardboard layers and fabric.
When did you launch Reality Studio?
January 2005.
What inspires you / your work?
Everything that surrounds me.

Describe your SS’10 Collection.
Our SS10 collection is taking cues (with a bit of Irony and Humor) from the Wild Wild West. Pants and dresses are enhanced with fringes and accessorized with talisman and feathers, while jackets and shirts feature asymmetrical cuts. Easy to wear pieces that take femininity and sexiness beyond the tight, short and revealing to a place of ease and modernity.
What is your favourite piece from your SS’10 Collection?
Tala waistcoat (pictured above, left): a high shouldered fake suede leather rider waistcoat in brown color with zipper.
Did you have a personal soundtrack or a favourite album that you listened to while working on SS’10?
Ruichi Sakamoto (Pianoworks) & Moderat.
What area of your work do you enjoy the most?
Imagination and mind flowing.
What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
Administrative work.

What is the most surprising thing that has happened to you as a designer?
There are surprises everyday...good ones & bad ones. Difficult to say what was most surprising...
If you could collaborate with any designer, artist, musician, etc. on a single project, who would it be and what would you do?
I already do collaborate with some of my dream artists like Michael Kalki (the Cosmic Camouflage print for AW10/11 springs from one of his paintings) and Jen Ray - we did some costumes for her performances.
If you could design a wardrobe for any one person (past/present/real/fictional), who would it be?
David Bowie and/or Tilda Swinton.
How would you describe your own personal style?
Casual androgyny.

What is your favorite item in your personal wardrobe?
A necklace from the new AW10/11 collection called Milkyway necklace. I wear the sample.
Where do you shop for clothes when you're not wearing your own?
I swap or buy a lot with/from other designer-friends – like Maiami, Makin Jan Ma, Saskia Diez, Starstyling...

A practical and special swimsuit
What fashion trend would you not be caught dead in?
Skulls.
