Designer Interview: Alter & Kiss
Posted on May 14 2010

ALTER & KISS was the leading Central European fashion house that served the royals in the 19th century. It was founded in 1829 by Antal Alter from Vienna, and specialized in exquisite tailor-made gowns for the high society. The brand was revived in 2009 by Central St. Martins graduates Gabor Fabricius and Mei Mei Ding. Every season, ALTER & KISS invites young international designers from top fashion schools across Europe to to design for the collection. The SS 2010 collection was designed by London College of Fashion graduate Mojzes Dóra.

Paper-Doll:How did you get into fashion design?
Dóra Mojzes:I was raised in a family where art was a base, so the milieu and the opportunity was given, I wasn’t really thinking about another career.

What is the first thing you designed (personally or professionally)?
The first “serious” dress I made was in high school, where I have finished as a leather goods designer. My final exam work was a leather collection, which included bags, dresses, coats, etc.

When did you launch your own label?
My label, dora mojzes was founded in 2009. I designed the Spring Summer 2010 collection for Alter & Kiss

What inspires you / your work?
Music like Tool/NIN/Juliette Lewis.Artists like H.R.Giger,Oleg Dou,Alexander McQueen...Woman like Monica Belucci.
Describe the SS’10 Collection for Alter & Kiss.
For the SS’10 collection, our inspiration is to create designs for the global new royals jet-setting back to the1930’s San Tropez for a holiday of leisure, fun, and parties. We play with traditional pleats, classic collar and trouser shapes, meanwhile mixing them with modern silhouettes, fabrics, simple black and white palette, and typography to create an easy-to-wear look that is contemporary yet classic.

What is your favourite piece from the SS’10 Collection?
The black and white vertical striped mini dress with big bow on each shoulder (pictured above).

Did you have a personal soundtrack or a favourite album that you listened to while working on the SS’10 collection?
I've listened Rósín Murphy a lot.

What area of your work do you enjoy the most?
I love the design part the best, but I also like making illustrations.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
To finish the work for deadline!
What is the most surprising thing that has happened to you as a designer?
Kanye West wrote about me on his blog :-)

If you could collaborate with any designer / artist / musician / etc. on a single project, who would it be and what would you do?
I’d love to work with H.R.Giger or Gottfried Helnwein. Their works always affects me! But I’d also like to work with Tim Burton...designing clothes for his movie...or something like this.

If you could design a wardrobe for any one person (past/present/real/fictional), who would it be?
I love the style of Dita Von Teese and Juliette Lewis. They have a very different style and they’re pretty different people, but I like both! :-)

How would you describe your own personal style?
Little bit dark, little bit pin-up. Red lipstick and high heel compulsory!
What is your favourite item in your personal wardrobe?
A dotted Moschino dress!

Where do you shop for clothes when you're not wearing your own?
My favourite shop is All Saints!

What is on your current fashion wishlist?
Too long :-)

What fashion trend would you not be caught dead in?
I would never ever wear a Crocs or design for them!

What is the one item that every woman should have in her closet?
High heels!
What is your favourite thing about the city you live in?
(Budapest) I can go anywhere and I always meet one of my friends!:-)

If you couldn’t be a fashion designer, what other area of interest would you like to explore?
I'm interested in history of fashion and history of art!

What is next for your label?
I've been working on my own collection since 2009. My new collection coming out in March is inspired by Jeanne D'arc.
