Designer Spotlight: Speech
Posted on Jun 09 2009

Toronto has a new export - Speech jewelry made by designer Michael Mercanti. His handcrafted pieces incorporate a myriad of influences, but come together in a collection that, after just one season already has a look and feel that is recognizably Speech.

Paper-Doll: How did you get into jewelry design?
Michael Mercanti: I was interning at a men’s wear brand called BULLY while studying fashion arts in college. I started to make jewelry for the store using metal chain, leather, & feathers. I would put each piece up for sale in the store and people started buying it so I guess I was doing something right!

What is the first thing you designed?
I used to love reconstructing jeans and making them rad - ripping them and shredding them to look different. My first professional design was a wax carving mold which later turned into my first official necklace.

What inspires you / your work?
Everything around me inspires me. History.Travel.People and music. It could be anything from song to a nail on the ground. It’s all about taking your visions and making them happen.

Describe your Spring Summer 09 Collection.
Pirate & Aboriginal Love with a little Punk Rock Chic.

What is your favourite piece from your Spring Summer 09 Collection?
My anchor and Sgt. Pepper Pin.
What is the most difficult thing about your job?
Finding the next wave of cool.

If you could collaborate with any designer / artist / musician / etc. on a single project, who would it be and what would you do?
I would love to wear a Daft Punk Helmet and travel with them to Space.

What fashion era do you love?
I would say the Mod 60’s especially with all the parties.

Do you have a real or imaginary muse?
My imaginary Boston terrier Benico...he usually barks when I hold up a design to him.
What fashion trend would you not be caught dead in?
Argyle Sweaters, Square toe shoes & skull-wing shirts. Ewwww!

What is your favorite item in your personal wardrobe?
My black underground boots and my pirate bracelet. It’s been on my wrist for 8 months and counting

Where do you shop for clothes/jewelry when you're not wearing your own?
Carte Blanche is my favorite store on Queen West and Kensington Market for vintage. I also enjoy antique stores and flea markets.

What is on your current fashion wishlist?
A pair of Gucci moccasin sneakers for spring and some new Tom Ford sunnies.

What is your favourite thing about the city you live in? (Toronto)

Multiculturalism & the little queen west bar — the social.

What is next for your label?
My new collection “HARDWARE” and online store.

Awesome jewelry! It's so edgy!
The photos on this page are awesome! I'm wondering who the photographer is, as they are not credited...
Hi Rebecca. We always link to the main site (in this case link ). The photographer may not be credited on their site, especially if the designer has purchased the rights to use the photos however they please.
