Artist Spotlight: Christine Navin
What first attracted me to Christine Navin's photographs was the honesty and rawness of her subjects. I was left intrigued, wishing to have been a fly on the wall for just a few more moments after the photo was snapped. Beautiful and slightly imperfect – Navin's photos evoke a nostalgic longing for those moody days of fading youth.
For Brooklyn Boudoirs – the series of photos featured in the Paper-Doll Artist Project – Navin asked some of her closest friends, who all happen to live in Brookly, to let her into their bedrooms. Encouraged to take on aspects of their their desires and dreams, Navin captures moments that are silly, sad and sensual.
Artist Bio:
Navin grew up in Massachusetts and began taking photographs to capture (or counter?) the boredom of her small town life in the early nineties. It was only when she began studying at the Mass College of Arts in 95 that she began to delve deeper into photography, film and video. In 99 she moved to London to pursue a masters of art in photography at Goldsmith College. Since returning to Boston from London in 2000, Navin has shot thousands of photos of her acquaintances and their created identities, her alter-ego, Violet Shuraka, and the places she has wandered. In 2004 she finally moved to NYC, where she had dreamed of living since she was a bored teenager stuck in the suburbs of Massachusetts.
