During a stopover in London last week, I stumbled on a magical exhibit at the Barbican Art Gallery showcasing the exquisite work of Dutch fashion duo – Viktor & Rolf. As one might guess, the House of Viktor & Rolf is anything but normal. The retrospective is showcased over two floors of the Barbican gallery using a mixture of regular and life-size dolls decked out in perfect replicas of signature pieces from each of their collections since 1992. All of this is centered around a giant doll house. Cameras were not allowed inside, and the internet is (strangely) void of many good photos of the exhibit – which is probably a good thing because it’s quite the spectacle to observe in person. If you’re going to be in London, England before the 18th of September, do not miss it.
This exhibit definitely ignited in me a new-found appreciation for the quirky duo. Sometimes more art than fashion, their collections are consistently theatrical and clever – playing heavily with dualities, opposites and contrasts. I can’t wait to see what they come up with for their next collection!
